Shadow Labyrinth: A Confounding Metroidvania

short-reviews Jul 18, 2025

Shadow Labyrinth is a bold attempt to merge Pac-Man with the Metroidvania genre, but the result is a mixed bag. While the combat mechanics are enjoyable, they feel uninspired compared to recent genre standards, overshadowed by titles like Nine Sols and Prince of Persia. The game’s narrative, attempting a dark twist on a beloved character, often comes off as forced and lacks emotional depth. The maze levels, however, provide a brief burst of energy with catchy music and inventive gameplay, contrasting sharply with the otherwise drab atmosphere. Exploration rewards players, but the feeling of déjà vu is hard to shake as many mechanics seem borrowed. Overall, it’s an interesting mess that entertains but struggles to establish its own identity.
